Variants of Braddon The name Braddon is not always spelt thus. We find also Bradons, Braddens and Bradens. Are these variants alternative spellings, transcription errors or quite different surnames with different origins? After all, as was explained in the 'Origin of name' section, a dun is a hill and a dene is a valley. One method of trying to discover whether these surnames are of different origins is to compare their early and the Braddon early locations. Braddon.

It would seem from the comparison of these distributions that most Bradon occurrences are as a variant spelling of Braddon. NB. There are none in Wales or Ireland.

This situation is more complex; while the Bradden occurrences in Devon and Cornwall are likely to be spelling variations of Braddon, those in Wiltshire could also be that or have a different origin. The distinctive grouping in Hertfordshire may be migrant family grouping or a quite different name of origin.

It would seem that Braden is a variant spelling of Braddon, Bradon and Bradden, especially as the precise parish locations often coincide.
